A new 5,200m2 park, known as Haberfield Gardens, has opened to the local community, marking the completion of a suite of green space legacy projects that have been delivered as part of the WestConnex New M4.

WestConnex CEO Andrew Head said the new recreation space, located within the Haberfield Conservation Area between Wattle Street and Walker Avenue, forms part of 18 hectares of open space within Sydney which is being provided through WestConnex.

“We're thrilled to officially open Haberfield Gardens which provides a new, high quality open space with enhanced active transport links for the local community to enjoy,” Mr Head said.

“We appreciate our neighbours' patience in delivering this project and thank local residents for their contribution which has inspired key features of the park, including the heritage brick work throughout the space, and a glass noise wall on Wattle Street to improve the park's amenity featuring local native flowers and historic map of the local area.

“Haberfield Gardens features a formal entry to reflect the heritage character of the area, playground for younger children, drinking fountains, seating, shade sails, and fully accessible pedestrian and cycle paths, which provide new connections to Walker Avenue, Parramatta Road and Wattle Street.

“Significant landscaping works, including 65 trees and more than 100 shrubs, have further enhanced the park and added to the 5,500 trees which have already been planted along the project corridor.

“A 'Haberfield Gardens' hand painted wall mural is another feature which highlights access to the park from a new shared path at the end of Allum Street.

Mr Head said the legacy projects for the New M4 project had resulted in an increase in high-quality open space being made available to the communities of Strathfield, Canada Bay and Inner West councils.

“More green space will be delivered through WestConnex than any other urban road project in Australia's history,” Mr Head said. “In addition to Haberfield Gardens, local communities in Sydney's inner west now have access to the new 2.5 hectare Ismay Reserve at Homebush, as well as world-class hockey facilities and upgraded rugby fields and cricket nets at St Lukes Park in Concord.

“We look forward to opening up more green and open recreational space to the community as the various stages of WestConnex are completed, including around six hectares of open space in and around the St Peters Interchange as part of the M8 when it opens this year.”

Haberfield Gardens is located at 12-18 Walker Avenue, Haberfield and can be accessed via Walker and Allum Streets.
