Heritage items now available to community
25 Apr 2017
Community members are being invited to register their interest for more than 460 items which have been carefully salvaged from properties in St Peters. “More than two-thirds of WestConnex is being built in underground tunnel to minimise the impact to local residents and keep property acquisitions to an absolute minimum, however some properties in St Peters were required to be cleared for the New M5, including some with heritage features” New M5 Project Director Ken Reynolds said. “Special care has been taken to identify and remove these items, with a heritage consultant engaged to oversee each step of this important process to identify architectural features which should be preserved and can be reused. “Items available include ceiling roses, fireplaces, window frames, chimney pots, and veranda railings, and will be offered to community members free of charge. “Work has involved the careful dismantling and removal of each piece by hand, and securely storing each item.” Mr Reynolds said Sydney Motorway Corporation worked in close collaboration with Inner West Council to determine the best way to offer these important salvaged items to the community and make them available to residents within the local area. “We are absolutely committed to working with community members to ensure that salvaged items recovered continue to be enjoyed for many years to come,” Mr Reynolds said. “Anyone is invited to register their interest, with items allocated in order of preference with priority given to the previous property owners and other property owners within the St Peters local area. “A heritage salvage catalogue, which will be placed on exhibition until Monday 5 June, includes pictures and a condition rating of each item providing community members with detailed information of the items available.” Community members can view the catalogue of items online at www.westconnex.com.au/heritage-newm5, or in person at the New M5 Community Information located at 27 Burrows Road, St Peters. Community members are invited to register their interest in obtaining items by completing the Heritage Salvage Registration Form available on the WestConnex website. Completed forms and supporting documentation must be posted to O'Connor Marsden & Associates, New M5 Heritage, Locked Bag 3002, Australia Square NSW 1215.
