New Campbell Road Bridge and green link between Mascot and St Peters now open

22 Jun 2020

A new bridge extending Campbell Road across Alexandra Canal is now open, providing motorists, cyclists and pedestrians with a new link to connect the growing Mascot precinct and St Peters.

M8 Project Director Terry Chapman said the toll-free Campbell Road bridge is a major feature of local road upgrades and new active transport connections around the St Peters Interchange, which are being delivered as part of the $4.3 billion WestConnex M8 project.

“After more than 80 years, the community has access to a new connection across Alexandra Canal which will significantly improve the local road network and help alleviate congestion,” Mr Chapman said.

“The Campbell Road bridge features two lanes in each direction and extends Campbell Road east to Gardeners Road, Mascot via a new intersection with Bourke Road, providing an alternative to the regularly congested Ricketty Street bridge, last upgraded in 1936.

“The bridge has also been designed to improve pedestrian and cyclist movements in the local area, with footpaths on each side of the bridge, as well as a 2.5m wide dedicated cycleway.”

The bridge forms part of the Campbell Street and Campbell Road corridor upgrade, which provides motorists with two lanes in each direction between May Street, St Peters and Gardeners Road, Mascot, and the Campbell Street Green Link, which has significantly enhanced active transport connections in the local area.

“The Campbell Street Green Link has been extended across Alexandra Canal and includes 1.2km of new and upgraded shared paths which connect Camdenville Park, Simpson Park and Sydney Park with Mascot, including a dedicated cycle connection to the existing Bourke Street cycleway,” Mr Chapman said.

“It’s part of around 12km new and upgraded active transport links which are being delivered around the St Peters Interchange as part of the M8 project.”

Campbell Road will give motorists access to the M8 via the St Peters Interchange which will provide a direct underground link between St Peters and Kingsgrove, via twin 9km tunnels.

“We’re looking forward to opening this crucial project stage in the coming weeks, which will provide relief for thousands of motorists, cutting up to half an hour from a journey between Liverpool and South Sydney,” Mr Chapman said.
